The classic Coach Town Bag saddle flap circa 1970s

The gloved tanned leather bag that gets better with age

On the passenger side today is one of my oldest Coach bags.

This is the Town saddle flap, with a design circa late 1970s to early 1980s. Her glove tanned leather in that beautiful British tan hue is buttery soft and smooth. And she has scratches and imperfections that is hidden behind all the lathering of Cadillac leather lotion and TLC that I give to her.

My vintage Coach Town saddle flap bag is meant to last for my next of kin. This impeccably crafted piece is built by Coach so that this bag can continue being the handbag companion of my daughter. This way she can add to the to the many stories of where this handbag has been.

But for today, it would be a follow-up appointment at the Doctor's office and a pitstop at the nearest coffee shop for an afternoon of maccha green tea latte, while reading time my book of the week.

How about you? What is your handbag today and what story would it tell?

Are you interested in a vintage Coach handbag?

Coveting a vintage Coach handbag is a challenge. These designs are pre-2002.

One can either rummage through a Mum's or a relative's closet and see if they will part with their Coach handbag.

Or try to barter in garage sales, flea markets, or your local antique shop. If you prefer the comfort of your home, then try using popular pre-loved markets such as Poshmark or Mercari.

The caveat to these alternatives, however, is placing trust in the sellers, where you can run the the risk of purchasing a counterfeit Coach.

As part of Coach's commitment to sustainability, the company launches their Coach (Re)Loved program which incorporates five areas:

  • Coach leather care and repairs

  • Coach restore and vintage icons program

  • Coach up-crafted

  • Coach remade

  • Coach re-loved and exchanged

When purchasing a vintage handbag through Coach, they guarantee the following:

  • Coach will carefully authenticate bag

  • Their craftspeople will restore the bag to a 'like new' condition. The rejuvenation process is done by hand.

  • Their master restorer goes through a multi-step process that gives special attention to the handbag.
